The market cross appears to have suffered either damage or erosion in the past. According to Pevsner's 1960's edition of the Buildings of England - Yorkshire West Riding, the cross dates from 1790. The book is rather dismissive of Selby, apart from the abbey, and it will be interesting to see what the 21st century version of the guide has to say about the town.
