Built in 1794-96 as a lunatic asylum, "a pioneer establishment in England for humane treatment of the insane and for occupational therapy", but the centre has the appearance of a Georgian house. The architect was John Bevans with Peter Atkinson (senior). Much enlarged since. Grade II listed. It still has the same function but the terminology has changed so that now it offers treatment for people with mental health needs.
