This building on the junction of Ockham Lane and Alms Heath was created by William King, 1st Earl of Lovelace and husband of Ada Lovelace, in 1864 to replace the Hautboy and Fiddle public house which he had acquired in 1833. King himself acted as architect for the project. The building became a hotel in 1895 and was later a public house closing in 2007. This grade II listed building was converted into residential units in 2011. The Hautboy was involved in a notable court case in 1898 when Lady Harberton, leader of the Rational Dress Society stopped at the inn on a cycle ride wearing baggy knickerbockers and was refused service due to her unsuitable attire. The Cyclists Touring Club took up her case in court but lost.
