The Reverend Hawker of Morwenstow was the moving force behind the building of the bridge over the stream, and this records the story: Towards the erection of this bridge built by subscription in the year of human redemption 1836 His Majesty King William the Fourth gave the sum of twenty pounds. Fear God, honour the king. There is an OS benchmark incised at the foot of the stone
