Also known as St John's Kirk and Midcalder Parish Church, the oldest part of the building dates from about 1541. It is only the choir of what was intended to be a much larger church, but although its founder, Magister Peter Sandilands, left detailed instructions for his nephew about the rest of it, the nave was never built.
