Former Commercial Bank, Argyll Square - April 2016 (1)

Built in the mid-19th Century, these premises started life as Oban's Municipal Buildings. When local administration moved to the current Sheriff Court premises circa 1889, the building was acquired by the Commercial Bank of Scotland, architectural services for the internal redevelopment being provided by Sydney Mitchell & Wilson. There were clearly further alterations, as the 3rd floor is a later addition. Following its merger with Lloyds Bank in 1958, the Commercial Bank changed its name to the National Commercial Bank of Scotland. The National Commercial merged with the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1969 and it is probable this building was then purchased by the Clydesdale Bank, who vacated their premises on Argyll Square (see: Image]).
