The structure with the white railings and the steps is the effluent outfall that housed coke filters to catch nasty chemicals from the British Gas Midlands Research Station (MRS). One of my friends was a chemical engineer there doing research on coal hydrogenation and I got a tour of the large Brunel building on an open day for family (!) members. This and an inaccessible bridge are about the only remnants of quite a large site. The water is the Grand Union Canal.
