Chatterly Whitfield (Originally Whitfield Colliery) began producing coal in the 1830s. By 1937, with manpower in excess of 4,000, the colliery had become the first colliery in Britain to mine one million tons of saleable coal in one year. In spite of nationalisation in 1947, the colliery closed on 25th March 1977. (Information from local signs) Today, the site struggles to become either a mining museum or a business centre, though its spoil heaps have been re-landscaped to create a country park.
