The thing that resembles a cheese grater is a depiction of the Anglo-Saxon/Norman church tower. The horse-drawn plough represents the agricultural heritage of the parish while the fruit represents its horticultural aspect. I can find no reference to the date 973, and was probably chosen to indicate a millennium of history.
