The church is dedicated to Thomas à Becket, instigated no doubt by the Norman Tironian abbey (which was itself dedicated to St Mary). But the parish gets its English name from St Dogfael, who also appears as Dogmael, Dogwell and Degwell. The Welsh name - Llandudoch - refers to an apparent Tydoch. There are two distinct possible explanations: Tydoch may be a local variant of Dogfael, or Tydoch was another saint to whom the parish was originally dedicated before being sacked by the Vikings in 988. The rather anarchic variation in names may be due to Irish influence in the area.
