The plantation on the skyline masks a chalk quarry operated by Omya UK, whose Whiting Works is on the right of the picture. The company's website explains that there has been a quarry here since 1820, and that its Morden Rock is a very pure form of calcium carbonate used for fillers and in food production. The Melbourn Whiting Company began commercial production of industrial fillers in 1946.
