At least, I assume it serves that function. Much of the field to the left is waterlogged (this is the rather soggy plateau of Broadbury after much rain, although I suspect this is an older problem), so perhaps this is an attempt to improve the drainage. Following Germansweek Bridleway 11 across it requires wellingtons and good balance. The small stream that the embayment has extended is a headwater of the River Wolf.
