Katherine Street is named after the wife of George Henry Grey, the Seventh Earl of Stamford. His wife, whom George married on the 29 August 1855, was a circus bareback rider. https://mancunian1001.wordpress.com/2013/02/14/down-our-street-6-katherine-street-and-penny-meadow-ashton-under-lyne/ The playing fields on the left are on the site of Curzon Ashton F.C. who have since moved to a new ground at Crowhill.
