Electric Avenue, built in the 1880s, was a stylish Victorian shopping street - the first in the area to be lit by electricity. Immortalised by Eddy Grant's song ("we'll rock down to Electric Avenue"), a major hit in 1983, it has a different personality nowadays, hosting a part of Brixton Market whose colourful stalls crowd in amongst the food and other shops.
