Just north of Wentbridge & a deprecated original section of the Great North Road's Doncaster to Ferrybridge branch remains as it climbs Jackson's Hill in Darrington; it is now classed as a bridleway. The c.1830 cutting, which aimed to ease the ascent, forks off to the left - only to rejoin the ancient alignment ⅜mi. up-the-road. Add to this the A1-classified 1961 bypass which lies further east & for a short distance there are actually three incarnations of the GNR that run in close parallel.
