This memorial plaque to John McDouall Stuart, the Scotsman who became one of Australia's greatest explorers, can be found on the wall of his childhood home in Dysart, Fife. The plaque is misleading in claiming that he was the first to cross Australia from south to north (an expedition led by Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills did so two years earlier) but he was the first to cross through the middle of Australia from south to north.
