What is now Oakwood Park was originally part of Enfield Chase. The name of the park is derived from a converted 19th century farmhouse known as Oak Lodge. Samuel Sugden lived in the lodge from 1870 until when he died in 1905. He left his estate, which formed the southern part of the present park, in the hands of trustees. In 1927 they sold it to Southgate Urban District Council to form the first 50 acres of the present park which opened in 1929. By then Oak Lodge had been demolished.
