Looking across the busy junction of Old Christchurch Road (ahead/behind), Dean Park Crescent (left) and St. Peter's Road (right). Until a year or so ago this was a roundabout, but it has been revamped controversially as a 'shared space', in which road markings are removed and the demarcation between road and footway diminished. There is still a kerb but it is at a low level, and the path leaving the Horseshoe Common parkland, far left of picture, is surfaced to continue uninterrupted across the road. The concept is that the lack of road markings giving priority to certain motorists over others, along with the likewise ambiguity of vehicle/pedestrian priority, will make all road users more cautious and as a result accidents will be less frequent.
