The buildings date from the 17th century, with some 15th c. fabric. They incorporate reputedly the oldest building in Kirkcaldy with a house recorded on the site in 1460. They possibly originated as two dwellings of wealthy merchants or shipowners and were due for demolition in the late 1940s, but were taken over by the National Trust for Scotland and restored in the 1950s. The buildings were converted to offices and a shop circa 1970, but have now stood empty for some years.
