A view across part of the Market Square, the charter for which was granted in 1227. The Bentinck Memorial was erected in 1849 in memory of Lord George Bentinck, the younger son of the fourth Duke of Portland, who was the local MP for many years. Unfortunately the memorial was never been completed because the funds collected at the outset - through public subscription - ran out before a statue of Bentinck could be added.
