This was the first railway built in this area and the only one to survive. It was built by the North Midland Railway and opened in 1840, though now is primarily a freight route with only the occasional passenger train. A later arrival was the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway whose line crossed the North Midland on the bridge which can be seen in the distance. This line opened in 1891 and finally closed to all traffic in 1984, passenger services having ceased in 1963.
