The three ex-SR participants (and one spare) on the 1948 Express Trials were all Bulleid 'Merchant Navy's' and were provided with LMS tenders with water-pickup as on their own Railway there were no water-troughs. Here is No. 35017 'Belgian Marine' on one of the preliminary runs without dynamometer car - to Carlisle. It was built 4/45 as No. 21C17, rebuilt in 3/57 and withdrawn in 7/66, but was not preserved - perhaps because it came last in the Race owing to its higher fuel consumption. (An indifferent photograph, taken in the rain in a great rush).
