The tiny twin hamlets of Virley and Salcott on the Essex coast once had a church each, but St Mary's at Virley had fallen into decay and the last service was held there in 1879, But in 1884 The Great Essex Earthquake struck . See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1884_Colchester_earthquake Both churches were destroyed, but only this one was rebuilt. and re-dedicated to serve both villages
