Deconstruction of Tameside Administrative Centre

The TAC Building (Tameside Administrative Centre) opened in 1981. It was built on the site of terraced housing and included a Presto supermarket (which later became a Wilkinson store) along with smaller shops looking towards the bus station. Despite being little over thirty years old, the building has become uneconomical to maintain and it is considered less expensive to demolish it and rebuild. Because of the lay-out of the building, and the way it is attached to the Victorian town hall and former water board offices, both of which are listed buildings, it is being “deconstructed” rather than pulled down or smashed with a wrecking ball. The demolition operation is taking place from the inside out, and much of the former Wilkinson’s store has already disappeared. Deconstruction is expected to last around a year. The work is taking place as part of the “Vision Tameside” project in which TAC will be replaced with a new public-service centre shared with Tameside College.
