The main hotel in the town. One of the North's major coaching and posting inns during the Stage Coach era. Stabling existed for seventy five horses and famous coaches arrived daily. It was reconstructed in the 1730's, but medieval stone, an old well and Tudor brickwork found in the subsequent alterations suggest a much older inn on the site.
