The so-called "Spanish City" was the central seaside attraction at Whitley Bay. Completed in the early years of the 20th Century, it included a dome which with a diameter of 16 metres was second in the country only to the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. The recently installed inscription draws on folk memory of those years: "Aaaah...Whitley Bay...The Dome! the white Dome! It was the Taj Mahal to us."
