Winford school is now festooned with red ribbons - as has much of the village, particularly the street furniture, as well as further afield. A local boy, Harvey Hext, was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer as well as being born with Down's Syndrome. His struggle with the treatment was widely publicised and the annual scarecrow festival was dedicated to him. Sadly, Harvey lost his battle on 30th November, aged nine. As red was his favourite colour, it was agreed to put up red ribbons all over the village. Not only the school has been marked so, indeed many of the road signs for miles around are now memorials to him.
