In late December 2015, a temporary red sign shows that Somerton rail(way) bridge is closed. The South Wales Argus reported in September 2015 that Somerton Road railway bridge, dating from 1850, needs to be completely reconstructed to accommodate the overhead lines which will power the electric trains when the South Wales Main Line is electrified later this decade. The bridge is expected to be closed to road vehicles until a new and improved bridge which can withstand modern traffic is completed. A temporary footbridge gives pedestrians access over the railway during the project.
