Thwaite Hall was built circa 1805 for J.W. Hentig, and much altered in 1853 for ship owner Thomas Wilson. Since 1928 it has been a hall of residence attached to the University of Hull. Depicted are the major additions made in 1938 and 1948-50. The stone gate piers once stood atop Hammond's store, Ferensway, Kingston upon Hull. The store was badly damaged during the 1939-45 War. Upon its subsequent demolition, the ornaments were saved by one of the family of Powell & Company, the then owners of Hammond's.
