The 120 foot mural shows historical events of South Shields and was designed by D Wilkinson. It was first hand painted on the wall by a Youth Enterprise Project team at the northern end of Commercial Road, Mill Dam in 1982. The retaining wall is an old railway embankment that used to carry trains into Low Shields Station (long since demolished). It includes images of the coal staithes, a coble landing slip, a lifeboat, fishing boats, workshops, Arbeia Roman Fort and the Shields Ferry.
