Opened in the late 1850s as the Indepenedent Tavern it later became known as The Dependent until its closure in 1947. For the next twenty years the building was a small factory run by Valezina manufacturing corkscrews and in 1973 became the Public House Bookshop, a radical left leaning bookshop run by Peter Cupidi, Native American who still resides in the city today. The bookshop closed in 1999 a victim of the removal of the net book agreement and the rise of online sellers. The premises then became a house whose owners have since restored the former pub frontage.
