Originally the home of Buxton's furniture store, an independent local business that began trading in second hand furniture in 1919 and eventually expanded and rebuilt their premises on the corner of Oxford Place in the 1960s. The shop closed in 2004 though the business still exists concentrating on flooring on an industrial estate in Woodingdean. Planning permission was originally given for a gym and flats but this was not taken up. In 2013 another application was submitted for the provision of student residences which was passed in 2014 and is now going ahead finally demolishing a building that had stood derelict for over eight years. The removal of the building has allowed a view towards the rear of the Co-Op supermarket, the car park in Oxford Court and more of St Bartholomew's church.
