An edge of the Welcome board can be seen on the right here. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4740545 The board records that the park was built with money from the Miners' Welfare Fund. A colliery spoil heap was levelled in the 1920s to create the park. The site was improved for the benefit of miners and their communities. Miners' Welfare Schemes were funded from a levy of one penny per ton of coal mined, after the Miners' Welfare Statute of 1920.
