A large block of flats on the eastern edge of town that was built between 1937-39. Its proximity to the former gas works meant it received much damage during World War Two; hit by shells in June 1942, strafed and bombed in August 1942 resulting in the death of Claudette Mawby a former Hollywood child star, bombed twice in May 1943 which badly damaged the building and resulted in the permanent evacuation of the remaining residents which included service personnel based at nearby Roedean School, and badly damaged again in February 1944. The original design contained 105 flats but have since increased with the removal of a restaurant in 1955 and ground floor shops a few years later and now total 132. The block is attracting the light from an autumnal November sunset.
