Originally the Bristol Hotel Shades that opened in the 1860s. Shades appears to have been an early 19th century Brighton term for a bar usually, but not always, attached to a hotel, giving the idea that something is being hidden. The Bristol Arms was once part of the Bristol Hotel which fronts onto Marine Parade though the hotel is now gone converted into flats called Bristol Court.
