At the Speyside Cooperage it is possible to observe coopers assembling and repairing barrels for the whisky trade. White Oak (Quercus alba) is sourced in Kentucky, USA and a pile of staves is visible below the viewing gallery. Traditional tools and reeds can be seen on the workbench. The Dutch reeds are used as a seal when fitting the barrel head and the cooper on the left is doing this. Before hoops are fitted the barrel is steamed to make the wood more pliable. The steam room is at the far end of the workshop on the right of picture. For more information see http://www.speysidecooperage.co.uk/
