This building started its life as a Methodist chapel in 1872 but subsequently became the Empire Theatre in 1910 and closed in the 1920s. For a short time it was called the Gaiety in the 1930s. During the early 1950s part of the frontage, at least, was a second-hand emporium under the name of Binns.
