This cannon, which was cast at the Carron Iron Works http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carron_Company was a gift to Dunfermline Town Council from the manufacturers. The purpose of this gift was to influence the Council to look favourably on an application to open iron foundries in the Dunfermline area, but as there were foundries already in the area, permission was refused. The cannon has been standing at the door of the Town House and later the City Chambers since 1772.
