The bricks are laid in Flemish bond http://www.geograph.org.uk/article/Brick-bonds#flemish-bond using contrasting colours for the headers and stretchers. This style of brickwork is fairly common in Carlisle, but these houses in Eden Street look particularly bright for their age.
