This is a typical fenland scene with a flat landscape, straight roads, large hedgeless fields, often isolated trees and lonely farms. Many of these roads on the Fens are very poorly surfaced and uneven, with sudden dips and hollows in the road. This is not helped by subsidence caused by peat shrinkage.
