St Mark's Church was opened in 1824, paid for by the government in gratitude for the defeat of Napoleon. It was severely damaged by enemy action in 1940 and scheduled for demolition; however, largely thanks to the efforts of Wallace Bird who was appointed vicar in 1947, the Archbishop of Canterbury agreed to have the building rebuilt. It was partially reopened in 1949 and fully reopened in 1960.
