The origin of the stone is obscure, probably medieval, and is traditionally thought to have been a plague stone during the 1665 epidemic. Goods would be left out, and paid for by the purchaser placing money in vinegar on the stone, so avoiding physical contact and contagion. Listed Grade II. The gas lamps are mid 19th century, part of a set of 4, also Listed Grade II.
