Opened in 1897 initially as an ice rink it was enlarged and converted into a theatre in 1901 becoming the main variety theatre in Brighton. It closed in 1964 and was converted into a bingo hall and reopened in 1967 which it remained until 2007. Since then the building has been empty the problem with any conversion is the huge cost of refurbishment which has stalled many plans. Permission was given to a convert it into a cinema and restaurant complex but the company withdrew in January 2015. Since June it appears the Academy Music Group are now the owners and want to develop it into a music venue, a plan they had already put forward back in 2007. In the meantime a local group is trying to raise funds to turn the venue into a theatre.
