The building was erected in 1977 and is due to be demolished in the next year or so. American Express have moved their European headquarters, a major employer in the city, around the corner to John Street, see Image, on the site of their old car park. The site is probably going to be used for new office development. Originally an area of slum housing containing George Street gardens, Boss's Gardens, Riding School Lane and Mighell Street that was developed in the 1810s. All bar the eastern side of the latter were cleared after the Second World War though remained undeveloped until American Express purchased the freehold around 1972. In the process of building their office block much of the remainder of Mighell Street was demolished.
