The height of the pulpil is not meant to reflect the status of the minister but rather to ensure that the minister could clearly be seen by people sitting in the balcony. Originally the boards behind the pulpit could be removed so that if the chapel was full addition people could hear the sermon from the adjacent downstairs hall.
