These fourteen terrace houses were built during the very early years of the London to Brighton Railway (seen behind), which then crossed Stoats Nest Road by a level crossing. But increasing traffic on the railway led to the construction of a bridge, so the roadway was lowered to pass under the railway at the bridge, leaving these houses some feet above the level of the road.
