Originally two different shops that were merged sometime in the 1970s. Forty five is the taller building on the left and was home to a succession of retailers during the 19th century including tea dealers, hatters, drapers, jewellers and shoe makers. The 20th century followed a similar pattern up to the end of the 1940s when it became a succession of restaurants who eventually expanded into neighbouring forty six. The latter also saw a regular turnover of traders and also included the usual mixture of shoemakers, tobacconists, jewellers, ladies and mens clothiers and milliners. Since the merging of the units food has been predominant particularly the fast food variety with the exception of fifteen years when building society, the Woolwich, occupied the premises.
