These two shops are rare surviving two storey houses dating from the early 19th century. There were once many more similar to these but have been demolished or refronted over the years. Number forty on the left spent much of the 19th century as either a butcher or cheesemonger and the first half of the 20th as a tailor. A few years were spent as a furrier and outfitter before twenty years retailing leather goods, Partners having moved from Image The final long term leaseholder was a photographic processor whose franchise holder disappeared with the money in 2007. After that the property has been occupiers by a number of short term leaseholders selling either gifts or baggage. Its neighbour has a much longer list of business passing through the longest serving trader in the 19th century was a tea dealer who lasted for fourteen years. The 20th century followed a similar pattern with Anita’s milliners lasting nineteen years as the longest serving trader. Since 2008 the shop has been a succession of short term leaseholder stores selling either gifts or luggage.
