Originally known as Madeira Terrace and opened in 1897 as a promenade along the top of the arches. The walkway is currently closed after serious structural issues were discovered within the iron arches in April 2015 with the rest below fenced off and a few businesses at the western end told to vacate their premises with immediate effect, see Image The current estimated cost for repair is estimated at £100 million something the cash strapped council can ill afford. Meanwhile in the distance new flats are being built at the Marina which will include a 40 storey tower block which has somewhere managed to bypass the original agreement that nothing would be built that would be taller than the neighbouring cliffs.
