The oldest remaining building on the Old Steine was built in 1765 for the owner of the former Castle Inn which was once located a couple of buildings to the north. It was acquired by the Duke of Marlborough in 1771 who sold it onto William Hamilton MP in 1786. It was the latter who remodelled the house using architect Robert Adam prior to his death in 1790. By the end of the 19th century it became the main offices for the Brighton School Board until 1974 after which it became the local Tourist Information Centre. By the mid 1990s it had become empty and remained so ever since though planning permission has been given in June 2015 to turn the building back into a single luxury home.
